Water Symposium

at University of Florida
February 16/17, 2009

This symposium explored water using the Apalachicola watershed as a case study. This watershed and the rivers that it feeds extend from western North Carolina southward into Georgia and Alabama and then into Florida where it meets the Gulf of Mexico in the Panhandle near the small community bearing the same name. The majority of the greater Atlanta metro area sits within the upper third of the watershed. Atlanta and other rapidly growing areas in the watershed are placing increased pressure on the finite quantity of available water and are also altering water quality. The result is competition with the region’s historical water consumers, its natural systems and agriculture.
